BBM, Course Details

The 4-year BBM degree programme aims at developing well-rounded individuals who are schooled in a range of diverse subject areas. Each student must complete 36 courses* from all the subject areas. Each subject area covers a list of courses, from which the student chooses his/her preferences according to interests and pace.
*Students admitted before AY 2008/2009 must complete 35 courses from all the subject areas

Foundation Courses

The foundation courses provide students with a basic background in math and economics. Students who have obtained good grades in these courses taken previously may be eligible for exemptions.

 University Core
The University Core is the heart of all SMU undergraduate programmes. The University Core aims to equip all students with the intellectual skills needed to operate in a dynamic and challenging environment. Students are expected to develop and fine tune analytical skills, adopt a creative approach to varying and rapidly changing situations, communicate effectively, and lead ably and successfully.

 Tracks
 
International Trading Track (ITT)
In july 2006, SMU launched a new Internatinal Trading Track (ITT) under the Bachelor of Business Management Programme. Students interested in the ITT are required to pursue Finance as a major. The track is supported by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and to date has attracted over S$1 million in funding support fom top international trading firms. The fund will be used to provide internships, industry collaboration, scholarships, study resources and networking visits. Students under this track must participate in the Industry Study Mission where they will visit key trade and financial centers as well as major ports, plantations, mines and warehouses. The visit will also allow students to observe trading activities in a broad spectrum of industries including oil, energy, agricommodities, metals and electronics.
 
You will need to declare FNCE with Track in ITT as your major and you must take the following courses :

Investment Banking Track (IBT)
SMU will launch a new Investment Banking (IBT) Track in 2008 under the Bachelor of Business Management Programme. Students interested in the IB Track are required to pursue Finance as a major.
 
You will need to declare FNCE with Track in IBT as your major and you must take the following courses :

Wealth Management Track (WMT)
SMU will launch a new Wealth Management (WMT) Track in 2008 under the Bachelor of Business Management Programme. Students interested in the WM Track are required to pursue Finance as a major.
 
You will need to declare FNCE with Track in WMT as your major and you must take the following courses :

 Business Options

The Business Options component in the BBM curriculum allows students to choose 3 other business courses offered by the School under Business Concentration, Global & Regional Studies and Technology & Entrepreneurship. Students may also opt for an Independent Study or take approved courses from other schools.

 
 General Education

To enlarge their scope of knowledge perspective, students are required to read a total of 4 General Education courses. Each student must choose at least 1 course from the Arts list and from the Science list. Students may be given exemptions of up to 3 courses on the basis of good grades in the relevant courses at the GCE A-levels, Polytechnic Diplomas, or other recognized qualifications.

 SMU Internship Programme

An important feature of the BBM is the internship programme at established organizations, both local and international. The internship programme aims to provide students with a deeper cross-cultural appreciation of business practices and research. The duration of the internship programme is a minimum of 12 weeks, of which two weeks must be spent in a voluntary welfare organization. This is to inculcate in students the value of being responsible and civic-minded citizens of society.

 
 Second Major

There is also provision for students to elect a second major outside the Business School in:

To qualify for a second major, students need to take additional courses as stipulated by the respective schools. Students may also elect to have a second major within the Business School . However, more courses would be needed to fulfill this choice.
