BENEDICT KOH (PhD, University of Pennsylvania)
Benedict Koh is Practice Associate Professor of Finance, and Director of the MSc in Applied Finance at the Singapore Management University. He was formerly Associate Professor of Finance and Accounting at the National University of Singapore and Vice Dean of the NUS Business School. Prior to joining the academia, he was a corporate banker at the Chase Manhattan Bank N.A.

Assoc Prof Koh is active in consulting work as well as executive training for banks, companies and government agencies. Some organisations that he consulted or conducted training programmes for include the ABN-AMRO bank, Citibank, DBS Bank, DBS Land, GIC, Hong Leong Group Bhd, Johnson & Johnson, JTC International, Keppel Land, NCC, Norsk Hydro Group, Prudential, Royal Brunei Airlines, SIA, SGH, SNEF, Stamford Residences and UBS.

He was the Associate Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Finance. He has written numerous articles that appeared in books, academic journals, Singapore Stock Exchange Journal, investment magazines and newspapers. His teaching and research interests are in Corporate Finance, Investment Management, Personal Finance and Financial Markets. His book on Personal Financial Planning, published by Prentice Hall, was listed as one of the top 5 best sellers in the non-fiction category. His latest book entitled Managing Your Money was recently published by McGraw Hill in July 2001.

CHAN SOON HUAT (PhD, University of Rhode Island)
Chang Soon Huat graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a PhD in Finance. He has taught at the University of Rhode Island, Mara University of Technology and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. His teaching and research interest areas include market microstructure, asset pricing theory and corporate finance.

Dr. Chan was formally a quantitative analyst with Citigroup Asset Management. His work covered a wide range of research on investment processes including equity analysis, model valuations, portfolio construction, risk-return analysis, performance attribution, asset allocation and backtesting. He has conducted research and analysis on various regions such as Asia-Pacific ex-Japan, Australia and Emerging Markets.

EDWIN CHOI (PhD, Australian National University)
Edwin Choi is an investment professional at a global investment management company. He has a diverse range of experience, having worked as a portfolio manager in various asset classes including fixed income and hedge funds. His interest is in developing quantitative trading model for financial markets. Prior to joining the financial industry, he worked as a postdoctorate at the Australian National University and has published articles in the Annals of Statistics, Biometrika and the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B.

Dr Choi holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Mathematics and Computation from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Statistics from the School of Mathematical Sciences at the Australian National University. He is also a CFA and CAIA charterholder.

CHOW HWEE KWAN (PhD, London School of Economics)
Chow Hwee Kwan is Practice Associate Professor of Economics and Statistics at the School of Economics and Social Sciences, Singapore Management University. She was formerly Lead Economist at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Vice President & Head at Overseas Union Bank, and Senior Lecturer with the Department of Economics, National University of Singapore. She taught Statistics, Financial Economics and Time Series Analysis & Economic Forecasting courses. Her main research areas are Econometric Forecasting, Exchange Rate Management in East Asia, and East Asian Economic & Financial Integration.

Assoc Prof Chow's publications have appeared in international journals such as Journal of Macroeconomics, Economic Letters, Journal of Applied Statistical Science, and Communications in Statistics. She provided consultancy services to ASEAN Secretariat as well as Department of Statistics, Ministry of Trade and Industry. She conducted many training programmes, for various organisations Econometric Studies Unit, Port of Singapore Authority and Civil Service Institute.

CHUA CHOONG TZE (PhD, University of Pennsylvania)
Chua Choong Tze is Assistant Professor of Finance at the Singapore Management University. Before joining SMU, he had worked in a technology start-up in Virginia, USA as well as the Development Bank of Singapore.

Asst Prof Chua is an active educator and researcher in various areas of finance including portfolio theory, asset pricing, interest rate models and mutual fund pricing. He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts and PhD degrees from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

PETER DOUGLAS (MBA, INSEAD)
Peter Douglas is the Principal of GFIA Pte Ltd, Singapore, which provides objective research on hedged investment in Asia. Previously, Peter was the Managing Director for Asia of Investor Select Advisors, a global fund of funds advisor, where he was responsible for the research team and process in the Asian time zone.

Peter is the inaugural elected council member for Singapore of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA), the inaugural secretary, and current special advisor of the Financial Planning Association of Singapore (FPAS), member of the Advisory Board of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association, honorary treasurer and trustee of the Student Advisory Centre (SAC), and holds non-executive fiduciary positions with a number of investment funds.

Peter is the co-author of best seller “Investing in Unit Trusts in Singapore’. He has also delivered numerous papers on investment and fund issues at conferences.

Peter is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst. He has an MBA from INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France and holds an honours degree in Medieval Studies from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom.

FRANCIS KOH (PhD, University of New South Wales; CPA)
Francis Koh is Practice Professor of Finance, and Director of the MSc in Wealth Management programme at the Singapore Management University. Prior to joining SMU, Dr Koh was employed by the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) where he held various investment and corporate positions. He was a Senior Investment Manager at Singa Infrastructure Management, a Co-Adviser of the AIG-Asian Infrastructure Fund. He carried out direct equity investments in a number of countries in the region, including China and Thailand.

Over the past 20 years, Dr Koh has been active in consulting and executive training. Organisations he has consulted for include Applied Research Corporation, Citibank and Malayan Banking. He was involved in projects involving corporate acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic planning. He has conducted training for various organisations, including GIC, IBM, Institute of Banking & Finance, Singapore Airlines and Standard Chartered Bank. He has also taught in the MBA and Master of Financial Engineering programmes at the National University of Singapore.

Dr Koh has published numerous articles in academic journals. His academic articles have appeared in the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Management. He has also written chapters in books, and presented papers at international conferences, including meetings of the American Finance Association and Academy of International Business.

Dr Koh holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) degree from the University of Singapore, a MBA degree from the University of British Columbia (Canada), and a Doctorate degree in Finance from the University of New South Wales (Australia). He is also a Chartered Management Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore.

WINSTON T H KOH (PhD, Princeton University)
Winston Koh is Associate Professor of Economics at the Singapore Management University. Dr Winston Koh was previously with the NUS Business School, National University of Singapore, from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, he joined J.P. Morgan Inc., to set up the Asian Emerging Markets Strategy team, which was consistently named by Institutional Investor as one of the top fixed income strategy teams in Asia. From 1998 to 2000, Dr Koh was in charge of risk management for Asia ex-Japan, and was a member of the Bond Market Committee of the Malaysian Monetary Exchange. In 2000, Winston joined OCBC Bank as a General Manager at the Bank of Singapore, where he was responsible for private equity investments. Dr Koh was also a Director of BOS Venture Management Pte Ltd, OCBC Capital Management Pte Ltd and several other companies.

Assoc Prof Koh received his PhD from Princeton University in 1988. He read Economics at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with Double First Class B.A. Honours, and was named Wrenbury Scholar in Political Economy.

Assoc Prof Koh has also been active in consulting and executive development programmes. Some of the institutions that he has consulted and taught for included the Economic Development Board of Singapore, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ministry of Finance of Singapore, National Science and Technology Board of Singapore, and the Singapore Government Investment Corporation (GIC).

Assoc Prof Koh has served as an Associate Editor for the Asia Pacific Journal of Finance. His publications have appeared in international journals such as Economics Letters, Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organisation, Journal of Economics, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, Social Choice and Welfare and others. His current research interests include investment management in global financial markets, economics of information and collective choice, and industry competition and market structure.

ANDREW LEE (PhD, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY)
Andrew Lee has more than 15 years of experience in both the financial services industry as well as academia. His industry experience covers corporate credit analysis, bond ratings, and structured credit products. Prior to joining SMU in December 2002, Andrew held various senior credit analyst appointments at DBS Bank, Standard & Poor's, UBS Warburg, and Banque Paribas. At DBS Bank, Andrew headed the fixed income credit unit of the corporate credit group responsible for evaluating and monitoring the credit risk of the bank's global corporate bond investment portfolio. At Standard & Poor's, Andrew was a senior analyst for corporate ratings covering the regional telecom, media and entertainment sectors. In addition to his industry experience, Andrew also spent numerous years with the Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University , where he was Senior Lecturer in Banking & Finance.

Assoc Prof Andrew Lee has extensive experience in executive teaching, consulting, and speaking at institutional seminars and conferences. He has also appeared on media interviews and his professional opinion on various topical issues has been quoted by Bloomberg, Business Times, CFO Asia, ChannelNews Asia, CNBC, Dow Jones, Lianhe Zaobao, and Straits Times.

Assoc Prof Andrew Lee holds a PhD degree in accounting and statistics from New York University , and is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) of Singapore . His current research and consulting interests are in credit risk analysis, corporate performance evaluation, and intangible asset accounting & valuation.

DAVID LEE (PhD, London School of Economics)
David Lee graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a PhD in Econometrics. His experience ranges from sell-side research, institutional sales to asset management. Dr Lee was the managing director of Fraser Asset Management, specializing in arbitrage, long/short strategies, portfolio allocation, index tracking as well as trade timing models. Prior to that, he was the managing Director of Institutional Sales at Fraser Securities, covering the Asia Pacific equities market.

Before joining the industry, Dr Lee has taught and conducted research in prestigious academic institutions including Harvard, London School of Business and National University of Singapore. He has also served as a consultant to numerous government agencies and multinational companies such as IBM and Price Waterhouse, constructing economic and financial trading models.

JOSEPH LIM (PhD, New York University)
Joseph Lim is a director of Vanden Advisors LLC, a valuation and advisory service. He was formerly a SVP in Marsh ( Singapore ), heading the Private Equity and M&A practice. Prior to that, he was Director of the Saw Center for Financial Studies and also an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance and Accounting at the NUS Business School . He obtained a PhD in Finance from New York University , an MBA from Columbia University and a CFA from the CFA Institute.

Joseph is President of CFA Singapore. He has served on other committees in the financial services industry, including the Investment Management Association of Singapore, SIAS Education Advisory and Most Transparent Company Award Selection Committee, and the Fund Management sub-group of the Financial Industry Competency Standards Committee. He was on the board of the NUS Academic Staff Provident Fund and served as an investment consultant to various organizations.

LEUNG HING-MAN (PhD, London School of Economics)
Leung Hing-Man graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a PhD in Economics. He taught for more than ten years at the National University of Singapore Business School before joining the School of Economics and Social Sciences at the SMU. His teaching and research areas include micro and macroeconomic theory, international trade and economic growth. He was awarded the university level Teaching Excellence Award in 1997, and the Business School level Best Educator Award in 2001, both from the National University of Singapore.

LIM KIAN GUAN (PhD, Stanford University)
Lim Kian Guan is Professor of Finance at the Singapore Management University. He has been a founding board member of the Asia Pacific Finance Association, and sits on the editorial boards of several international finance journals. He has been visiting scholar to Wharton, Stanford Business School, the Australian Graduate School of Management, visiting professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan, Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and various other universities. He publishes extensively and has won 2 prestigious international research awards in US and also in Taiwan. He is also consultant to many corporations over the years including being a finance expert witness.

AARON LOW (PhD, UCLA)
Aaron Low is a Vice President and Portfolio Manager at PIMCO, managing Global Bonds and Global Emerging Portfolios. He oversees Pimco’s investment strategy on Asia sovereigns and credits. He joined the firm in 2002, having been previously associated with Dresdner RCM Global Investors as Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Fixed Income, Asia. He has 11 years of investment experience and serves on the boards of various global associations as well as the editorial boards of international journal publications on investments.

Dr Low holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Honors from the National University of Singapore and a PhD in Financial Economics from the Anderson School at UCLA. He is also a CFA charterholder and currently holds the regional chair of AIMR Asia Pacific advocacy council.

EDWARD NG (PhD, OHIO University)
A PhD in Finance, Edward founded and runs Dren Analytics Pte Ltd which develops risk management applications solutions for and provides consulting services to credit institutions according to the Basel II framework. Prior to this, he has been a tenured faculty of the NUS Business School for nearly twenty years, teaching and researching in banking and financial markets.

Edward has conducted numerous seminars and paid workshops on Basel II related topics including Challenges in Basel II Implementation, Stress Testing, Credit Scoring etc. His views on the prerequisites for Basel II implementation have been taken into consideration by the Central Bank of Thailand which he is a consultant for. He is completing a IRB system approval manual to guide bank examiners on how to certify a bank for FIRB or AIRB. His expertise has been contributed to agencies like the United Nations, Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, ASEAN Business Forum etc. and he has consulted for a range of clients including Citibank, Asian Development Bank, Marketing Institute of Singapore, Singapore Computer Systems and SPSS etc.

As an academic, Edward has published in international journals including Journal of Finance, Global Finance Journal, Asia Pacific Journal of Management etc. He has also served on the editorial board of several journals and conducted executive training in both English and Chinese for banks in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China.

PHOON KOK FAI (PhD, Northwestern University)
In 1998, Dr Phoon Kok Fai, joined a multi-billion global investment company as Senior Manager (Training). In addition to managing the training activities of the corporation and the library, he organised and taught in-house programmes in investments.

From 1993 to 1997, Dr Phoon was Head of Equities Research at Yamaichi Research Institute (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Prior to joining Yamaichi, Dr Phoon was senior lecturer with the Department of Finance and Banking at the National University of Singapore. His areas of research were in the pricing of financial assets and empirical finance.

He has published numerous articles in academic and practitioners’ journals. His academic articles have appeared in Economic Letters, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Management. He has written chapters in books and presented papers at international conferences.

Dr Phoon has been active in consulting and executive education. He has carried out consulting projects for Citibank and American Express and conducted training for the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, Prudential Assurance and the Stock Exchange of Singapore.

Dr Phoon carried out his PhD studies in Finance at Northwestern University. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Singapore and Bachelor of Applied Science Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

JANAKIRAMANAN SUNDARAM (PhD, University of Minnesota; PhD, Indian Institute of Technology)
Sundaram Janakiramanan is Associate Professor of Finance at the Singapore Management University. He was previously at National University of Singapore, University of Melbourne, Australia, and University at Albany in United States of America. His research interests include Asset Pricing, Risk Management, and financing e-commerce activities. He has published in top journals in finance and won awards for best papers in conferences. He is also a regular contributor to Money Guru column at the Lycos Asia web page.

JEFFREY C . K . Lim (PhD, University of Cambridge)

Dr. Jeffrey C. K. Lim , certified Financial Risk Manager ( FRM ) and certified Professional Risk Manager ( PRM ), is currently the Managing Director of PI ETA Consulting Company , a Treasury & Financial Risk Management Consulting Company.

A Chartered Scientist ( C.Sci. ), a Chartered Mathematician ( C.Math. ) and an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (IMA), U.K. ( FIMA ), Jeff earned his Ph.D. in Stochastic Financial Modeling from the University of Cambridge in England. Jeff's research interest at Cambridge was in the area of Arbitrage Opportunities occurring in the Mispricing of Financial Options, and his original research culminated in the publication of his doctoral dissertation entitled: “Multi-period Mean-Variance Option Portfolio Strategies”.

Jeff was an authorized Securities & Financial Derivatives Representative in London , having been certified by The Securities and Futures Authority (SFA) in England , where he started his career as a Derivatives Analyst with Nomura International in London , England . He subsequently joined NatWest Markets from London , England to become its Head of Currency Structured Products for South and South-East Asia . Jeff then moved to American Express Bank to become its Director of Structured Products, prior to assuming his current position.

Jeff has also contributed to the development and enhancement of talent and infrastructure for Singapore 's financial center as a guest Professor at the National University of Singapore's Center for Financial Engineering, where he was responsible for the curriculum of its Master of Science degree program's core modules in Financial Derivatives and Treasury Management. In addition, Jeff has also been invited by the Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University to share his expertise in a similar capacity. In recognition of Jeff's expertise and experience in the field of Treasury and Financial Risk Management, the University of New South Wales Asia appointed Jeff to be its first Adjunct Professor with the university's Division of Business and Humanities.

At PI ETA Consulting Company, Jeff was Principal Inventor in two of the Patents that the company currently holds – one in Treasury & Financial Risk Management Systems, and the other in Knowledge Management Systems.

Professionally, Jeff is a Fellow of both The Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), U.S.A. and The Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA), U.S.A. He is also a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, U.K. and a Life-time Member of The Cambridge Society, U.K. Jeff is also honoured to be a Fellow of The Cambridge Commonwealth Society, U.K. , having been previously awarded the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Shell Group of Companies Doctoral Research Scholarship.

LEONG THIN YIN (PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
Dr. Leong Thin Yin is Practice Associate Professor of Information Systems at the Singapore Management University . Assoc. Prof Leong was formerly a faculty member of the NUS Business and had taught courses in operations and supply chain management in their undergraduate, MBA and executive programmes. In between academia, Prof Leong has spent many years time in the industry and last as Senior Vice-President (Operations and Information Technology) in PSA Corporations spearheaded their operations improvements, systems and technology development activities. He had also provided many models which supported management decisions in strategy, capacity development, operational planning and scheduling, financial and tax issues. One of his current pet teaching and research interest is in spreadsheets modeling and analysis, leveraging his past experience in using them for research as well as industry applications. Even when in academia, he had been active in business consulting and had worked with many MNCs and local companies, particularly those in the electronics, petrochemical, medical, hospitality, banking, government, and cargo and passenger transport logistics.

THEMIN SUWARDY (PhD, Monash University)
Themin Suwardy is Practice Associate Professor at the School of Accountancy, Singapore Management University. He was formerly a lecturer at Monash University, Australia and has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Accounting Information Systems and Auditing. He has also consulted a number of businesses in Australia on accounting systems and GST compliance. His main research area is the strategic choice of IT investments and related accounting issues with emerging technologies and markets. He is a member of the Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants, Institute of Certified Management Accountants and Australian Computer Society.
