CAREER SERVICES FOR POSTGRADUATES

The Office of Career Services (OCS) provides a variety of services to assist postgraduates in exploring career options and making effective career decisions.

Career Counselling

OCS (Postgraduates) holds general walk-in hours at the OCS office. Students are welcomed to drop by and speak to a designated career counsellor, who will be able to provide assistance with various aspects of the career development process. In addition, the office also offers a panel of 5 professional career coaches who provide one-on-one career counselling sessions on a face-to-face basis. Advising could include resume and cover letter critique, interviewing skills, job-hunting strategies, negotiation of remuneration package, career visioning and management etc.

Personality Profiling Tools

OCS offers an array of personality profiling inventory. Each tool is unique, and like a mirror, offers insights into different facets of a job seeker’s innate abilities, skill sets, interests, motivating factors, organisational fit, worker traits, values and aspirations. In addition, students also have the opportunity to learn more about their personality type vis-à-vis a host of other types of tools, for effective management of self and others in group and organisational settings. All available inventory tools are administered by certified coaches.

Enrichment Workshops

OCS offers a slew of enrichment workshops, year on, to help postgraduate students acquire life skills. Workshop topics could range from career planning, resume writing, interviewing to employment negotiations, wardrobe management and networking. These workshops are held throughout the year and are specifically targeted to meet the needs of students undergoing career transition. All postgraduate students will receive email alerts on upcoming workshops.

Job and Internship Listing

OCS serves as the principal point of contact for employers who wish to recruit SMU postgraduates as interns or permanent hires. We provide onsite and online recruitment services for prospective recruiters seeking talents. OCS uses email alerts for most of its job and internship postings. OCS also assists in scheduling the interviews, and will provide necessary aid prior to the interview.

Printing On-line Publications

OCS offers a range of publications about the career development process, job-search skills and tools, career fields and more. Career-related information pertaining to numerous organisations is also available for browsing at the Career Resource Centre.

Career Resource Centre

The OCS Career Resource Centre is a career reference library where you can access industry and company specific resources. There are also various reading materials, including trade and professional journals, employer directories and much more.

Networking Sessions

OCS organises 2 networking sessions in a year – allowing you to meet with potential recruiters in an informal setting. You will be notified of these events via email.

Recruitment Talks/ Industry Talks/ Company Visits

OCS organises recruitment talks and company visits on a regular basis. These talks serve as a platform for organisation to share information about their firm and opportunities that are opened to postgraduate students. Company visits also allow students to be exposed to the working environment, and for hiring managers to meet students on a one-on-one basis.

OCS also serves as the principal point of contact for employers who wish to recruit SMU interns or graduates. We provide both onsite and online recruitment services for the prospective recruiters sussing out talents. Partnering with potential employers, we are committed to making SMU students the preferred recruit, poised for possibilities.
