The SMU MBA is a general management programme. We do require 10 electives which is the participants' way of tailoring their course work to their needs.  For example if one wanted to take all electives in finance or marketing that would be possible.

Does the school offer entrepreneurial studies?
We do plan on offering a number of entrepreneurship electives including your first hundred days which is a course which mimics the challenges of a start up company as well as business planning.  In addition, Entrepreneurship (and Family Business) is one of the 4 industry sectors which we are committed to provide our students extensive exposure through guest lectures, company visits and other activities (other sectors are Energy, IT and Finance).

Am I required to participate in the sector components if I am not interested in these areas?
The sector activity is included in the SMU programme for the students to participate as they wish. While it is not compulsory, we do strongly encourage you to take advantage of some of the company visits, talks and industry studies as it will provide you with some deep insights into industries of global importance and broaden your network.

Does the programme take student's regular class attendance into consideration for assessment?
Yes, much of the assessment will be based on class participation which will make regular class attendance important.

Can I apply for a joint degree with any of SMU's other graduate programmes?
The application process for all graduate programmes at SMU is separately run. Credit for courses taken in other graduate level programmes will be considered on a case by case basis.

Will there be opportunities for the students to go on overseas exchange programmes?
We have been approached by a number of potential partners overseas and will continue to assess potential partners however this will likely only happen in a year's time. We will likely support business missions abroad during the summer.

Career Support

As the programme is new will it be difficult to find placements?
We do not anticipate it to be difficult.  This is one of our main drivers to keep a relatively small class so we are able to provide individual attention to each candidate.  SMU has over 700 close business recruiters already for the undergraduates and has been proud to boast a 100% placement record for the last 3 years on the undergraduate side.  We intend to keep up that record on the graduate level.

Could you please name some companies that have hired students from your university?
The list below is a sample list of companies that have held events at SMU since Oct 07.
AT Kearney, Bain, Barclays, Boston Consulting Group, British Petroleum, Burson-Marsteller, Caterpillar, Citibank, DBS, Deloitte and Touche, Deutsche Bank, Ernst & Young, GIC, Goldman Sachs, Hewlett Packard, ING Bank, Janssen-Cilag, Macquarie, MediaEdge, Maersk Shipping, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, NOL, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Prudential, Shell, SingTel, Standard Chartered, Temasek.

Will SMU help me find a summer attachment?
Yes, SMU's career services will actively help you prepare for summer internships. Some company internships will be combined with scholarships and will be determined before enrollment.

As a company sponsored student, will the sector activities and career services be available to me?
Yes, as we strongly believe that sector activities should be used as a way of increasing a participant's overall network, which may even be relevant to a current position. SMU will design career services programmes such as self assessment guides and career coaching with the purpose of improving a participant's overall job performance and long term career goals.
