Programme Structure & Curriculum
 

The Master of Science in Management (by Research) is a full-time programme. There will be one intake a year. Students will begin their 24-month programme of study in August (Term 1).

Students are required to complete 4 foundation courses and 4 faculty-directed research seminars by the end of Term 2; and master's thesis within 24 months of enrolling in the programme.

Foundation Courses

Students must take the following four foundation courses:

  • Management Theory
  • Introduction to Research Methods
  • Quantitative Research Methods
  • Field Research Methods

Each course meets 3 hours per week.

Faculty-Directed Research Seminars

Students are required to take four faculty-directed research seminars. These research seminars will equip students with the necessary skills to carry out their thesis research. They can choose approved graduate courses/seminars offered by LKCSB and other Schools in SMU.

A partial list of courses they can take in LKCSB includes the following:

  • Entrepreneurship and Business Creation
  • International Business
  • Corporate Governance
  • Strategy
  • Enterprise Development and Growth
  • Non-profit Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Family Business
  • Social Entrepreneurship

Each seminar meets 3 hours per week.

Graduation Requirements

Students must accumulate 20 credit units and fulfill the requirements listed below in order to graduate:

  • Foundation courses (4 credit units) – must receive a grade of B or above for every course
  • Faculty-directed research seminars (2 credit units) – must pass every research seminar
  • Independent studies (2 credit units)
  • Thesis preparations (4 credit units) - must pass every thesis preparation
  • Master's thesis (8 credit units) - must pass the thesis defense

Duration of the Programme

On a full-time basis, the programme is designed to be completed in 24 months.
